What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are made from a stabilized hyaluronic acid and are used to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, enhance certain features, correct asymmetry and replace soft tissue volume loss.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is already found in our skin. HA helps our skin attract and retain moisture, which can combat signs of aging. As we age our skin loses the ability to do that which causes us to lose volume and develop facial wrinkles. Dermal fillers are commonly used in conjunction with neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport.

Botulinum Toxin Type A is a neurotoxin that blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. This causes the injected muscle to not contract, softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Only dynamic wrinkles (caused by facial movements) can be treated. An example of dynamic facial lines are crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines. Botox® / Dysport® injections are also used as a preventive treatment against wrinkles.

What can be treated with dermal fillers?

Lips of a woman

Lips

Lip augmentation with dermal fillers can plump and add volume, add definition (create a more defined cupid’s bow) and correct asymmetry. Lip fillers can last up to 6-12 months

Under eye circles

Tear trough injections with dermal fillers is used to reduce hollowness and dark circles under the eyes which can cause you to look tired. This treatment is quick and effective with the procedure only taking 30 minutes and the results showing instantly. Under eye fillers can last up to 12 months.

Jawline

Jawline contouring with dermal fillers can create a more defined “chisled” jawline, reducing the appearance of jowls (sagging skin below jawline) and/or a double chin. Jawline contour is usually combined with Botox (Masseter injection), cheek augmentation or chin augmentation for best results. Jawline fillers can last up to 15 to 24 months.

Chin

Chin augmentation with dermal fillers is ideal for patients that have a small or retrusive chin. With filler we can define your chin and enhance your features. Chin augmentation is commonly combined with jawline contour for best results. Chin filler can last up to 15 to 24 months.

Cheeks

Cheek augmentation with filler can add volume above and around your cheekbones to create the illusion of a more defined bone structure, often what is achieved with makeup contour. By adding volume and lifting your cheeks you can also soften or reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (most commonly your nasalabiol folds). Cheek fillers can last up to 6 to 15 months.

Smile Lines

Nasolabiol folds and marionette lines can be softened with dermal fillers by adding volume to the area. Cheek augmentation is most commonly used in conjunction to help soften these lines. We can reduce the appearance but cannot completely remove nasolabiol fold lines as it looks very unnatural.

How many syringes do I need?

If you’re considering fillers, we’re sure you are wondering “How many syringes will I need?”. Well that all depends on your age, area of concern, and what you want your ending result to be. Dermal fillers are a building process and patients usually require a few treatments for satisfactory results.

We always recommended booking a free consultation with our nurse so we can asses your areas of concern and create a treatment plan that suits you.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

Ideally, anyone who is undergoing injectable treatments should prepare for their procedure by avoiding anything that thins the blood. We advise our patients to stop taking medications/supplements such as Aleve, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, gingko biloba, ginger, and green tea for 7-10 days prior to treatment in order to reduce the risk of bruising. We also recommend that you avoid alcohol consumption 24-48 prior as well.

Bruising and swelling is very common with dermal fillers so we advise if you have any events, that you have your treatment done 2 weeks prior.

FAQ

Answer: Results with filler are instant, however you will see the full outcome of your treatment in 2 weeks once swelling has gone down.

Answer: With any injection, you may feel a little poke. We numb certain areas prior to treatment to make your experience comfortable and with as little pain as possible.

Answer: Yes, it is completely normal to be swollen after receiving filler injections. Hyaluronic acid fillers work by pulling water into themselves which creates that plumping and smoothing effect. That is why you will be more swollen the first few days after your treatment. This swelling should subside gradually over the course of 2 weeks.
